Discovery is a program designed to give students opportunities to discover new interests and skills. Discovery aims to provide meaningful experiences that foster a passion for lifelong learning and personal development. Discovery takes students into the community to participate in real world experiences as well as bringing experts into the school to host new learning and experiences for our students.
Discovery Day classes and experiences will be from 12:00-2:30 PM. If you will not be bussed in (usually Pleasant Grove students) then parents will drop of their students just before 12:00 PM and pick them back up at 2:30 PM. If you need to be bussed in that day the bus will leave the pick up location at 11:30 AM (Arrive around 11:15. If you miss the bus you are responsible for driving your students to the location) from each of the pick up sites listed below and return to that site at 3:00 PM to be picked up (it is extremely important that you are on time to pick up your student). There will be a staff member and parent volunteers at the site to assist the students as they wait for the bus. Students will be divided into groups and assigned to an Adult Volunteer to ensure their safety. Make sure your children eat BEFORE they come. There is NO lunch or snack time. Discovery Day is funded completely by Canyon Grove Distance Education.
When Discovery Days are held on campus we will be offering 6 classes. Each student will choose and sign up for 3 classes to attend out of the 6 that are offered. Every participating student must sign up for 3 classes, one class for each of the 3 different class periods. Students cannot take two classes at the same time so make sure you sign up correctly. We are unable to accommodate students just wanting to participate in one or two classes a day. Each class will cap out at 20 students. When signing up if a class is already full students will need to choose a different alternative for that class period.
When Discovery Days is off campus we are all doing the same thing and therefore no need to make choices in various classes but simply the choice to participate in that session or not.
Goal of Discovery Day:
These experiences are designed to empower students to learn, practice, and develop skills that will support them throughout their life. Students will cultivate creativity, confidence, problem-solving skills, social skills, accountability, work ethic, and resiliency through a variety of guided exploration experiences. Unlike our field trips Discovery Day is just for our students.
To attend Discovery Days you will need to sign up by the registration deadline. Sign ups for each session will be closed and locked about two weeks prior to the start date of that session. Sign up forms are online. We will send out notifications via Remind when you are able to sign up for sessions. When you sign up you are committed to attend. After registration is closed we cannot accept any changes to your sign up.
You are responsible for your signups. All details for the session are in the description portion of the sign up. Please make sure you make note of dates and times and pertinent information as you sign up. You can also review that information on the signup or the Discovery Day website if needed. Please refer to these references when you have questions rather than asking us to remind you. Please make sure you sign up your children for the correct day as well as for the correct amount of slots for the number of kids you are signing up. Registration deadlines for the signup are posted on the signup and the website and will be adhered to. We will not accept any late registrations. Any changes you need to make in your sign up need to happen BEFORE the deadline. (including changes to transportation selections) For the safety of our students, you will need to stick with the transportation option selected on the sign up for the entire session. We cannot accept changes to where you are checking in our out or what days you are attending. If you need to make a change on your sign up you should be able to log in to your account and make changes to your signups before the deadline. If you do not make the necessary changes before the deadline you will be held responsible for what you signed up for. Make sure you give accurate information in the signup. You will receive notifications, updates, information and reminders through SignUp Genius with the information you provide (particularly email address and phone numbers). We are not responsible if you do not receive notifications. We can only work with what we have been provided. For best results please be signed up for Remind app as well.

Discovery Day Rules:
- Our Discovery sessions are a 3-4 week commitment. If you are unable to attend each week of the Discovery session, please do not sign up for the session.
- If something comes up and you are unable to come to one of the days that you have signed up for, please contact:
- Jana Stout: 801-810-9141, email@example.com
- Dress Code: We have Discovery Day T-shirts that must be worn on Discovery Days. The cost for the T-shirt is be $5.25. These shirts are available for purchase only in front office at the Pleasant Grove location. It would be wise to call ahead (801-785-9300) to make sure they have your size.
- Discovery Days are for all our enrolled students K-8 grade.
- Volunteers will be involved on an as needed basis. Unenrolled students are not permitted to attend with a volunteer ie. babies, toddlers, and other children that are not enrolled.
- Positive attitude and behaviors are expected. We reserve the right to require a student to take a break from Discovery Days until a behavior contract is established. We expect participants to follow directions and be respectful of people and property. We do NOT ALLOW name calling, swearing, physical aggression, or bullying. If any of these things happen during Discovery Days parents will be contacted and we will document the incident. We maintain and enforce a three strike policy with inappropriate behavior. Students who receive three strikes will be asked to not participate in Discovery until we are able to establish a behavior contract and it is followed.
- Riding the bus is a privilege and we required appropriate behavior from the students while on the bus. Safe and appropriate behavior includes: Sitting down correctly (on their pockets facing forward) the whole way, no physical aggression, swearing, name calling, bullying, and following bus driver and adult leaders instructions. We have a three strike policy. If your student receives a strike we will contact parents so you can support your child in maintaining appropriate behavior. This strike will also be documented for our records. A student receiving three strikes will no longer be able to ride the bus to and from Discovery Days
- We expect you to pick up your students from Discovery Days on time. Here is the late student pick up protocol.
Bus: If students ride a bus (ie. Springville, Draper, Lehi) and parents are late for pick up here is the protocol. Pick up time is usually 3:00 pm. At around 3:15 pm staff will be calling parents of students who have not been picked up to see where they are at. If you have provided incorrect or unused contact information in the sign up then we will not be able to get a hold of you because we use that information provided. At 3:30 pm any students who are not picked up will ride the bus back to the school and wait in the front office to be picked up there. Please note that the school and front office close at 4:00pm.
Canyon Grove Academy: Pick up is at 2:30 pm. At around 2:45 pm our staff will be contacting you to see where you are at for picking up your students. If we cannot reach you students will be taken to the front office to wait for you to come and pick them up. Please note that the regular school lets out and will be in the middle of their carpool pick up during that time and that the school and front office close at 4:00 pm.
Please ensure that you contact information is current in the case of an emergency. There will be no unsupervised interaction with students unless it is with a staff member who has received a background check.
Tuesday Discovery Day: Thursday Pleasant Grove & Draper
Wednesday Discovery Day: Monday Pleasant Grove & Springville
Thursday Discovery Day: Lehi, Eagle Mountain, and Herriman
If you cannot attend Discovery Day on the assigned day you are able sign up and attend on a different day but first priority in choosing classes will go to those that are assigned to that specific day.
***There will be NO Team Leaders this year. We have decided that the overall goals of having a Team Leader program would not be met with the time we have available. Also, because we have changed our system of running Discovery Days we will not be using Team Leaders this year.***
We need parent volunteers for each session. Volunteers are vital and ensure the success of the program. We need you and are so appreciative of your help. Volunteers will help with managing safety of the students and monitoring for appropriate behavior. Parent volunteers will need to purchase and wear a Discovery Day T-shirt at each session. This helps ensure the safety of our students as they know who they can go with questions and easily identify adults that are with the group. Unfortunately, as a full day parent volunteer, you may NOT bring younger children with you as you volunteer. We need your full focus. You may have younger children with you if you are only volunteering to assist with the bus pickup and drop off. We hope you will join us on some or all of our adventures this year.
Discovery Day is a privilege and not a right. We have large groups of students to ensure the safety for as well as maintain a positive learning environment. We expect that participants will be respectful to their teachers, volunteers, and fellow students. We expect students to follow directions and participate appropriately. Anyone not following these expectations will follow this protocol. 1) be given a verbal warning will the the behavior expected clearly stated and allowed to stay with the group. 2) be asked to sit out (for about 10 minutes) before rejoining the group the student will need to commit to being responsible for their appropriate behavior and then rejoin the group. 3) they will be asked to sit out and a parent will be called to come and pick them up. When behavior gets to a level 3, parent, student, and Jana Stout or Jamie Bennett will need to work together to come up with a behavior plan for the student before they are allowed to attend Discovery again.
