Discovery is a program designed to give students opportunities to discover new interests and skills. Discovery aims to provide meaningful experiences that foster a passion for lifelong learning and personal development. Discovery takes students into the community to participate in real world experiences as well as bringing experts into the school to host new learning and experiences for our students.

Discovery Day activities are funded completely by Canyon Grove Academy. Please be respectful of that by fully attending what you sign up for. Discovery Day T-shirts are required to be worn to all Discovery Days. T-shirts are only $5.25.  Discovery Day classes and experiences are generally 2.5 hours long, from 12:00-2:30 PM or on Wednesdays only from 9:00-11:30 AM as well as in the afternoon. Which Discovery day and time your students should attend is listed below according to what location you are enrolled in. If you need to attend Discovery Days on a day different than your assigned day you are welcome to sign up but be aware that transportation options for each day are different and may not meet your needs as well as first priority in choosing classes will go to those that are assigned to that specific day.

Tuesday afternoon- PG Thursday students

Wednesday morning – Lehi, Eagle Mountain and Springville

Wednesday afternoon – PG Monday & PG Tuesday

Thursday afternoon – Draper and Riverton

Activities throughout the year are both on and off campus. Depending on where the activity is and what location you are enrolled in we will provide some buses as described in each individual session sign up. On the sign up you will choose your mode of transportation for the whole session. With parent transportation, parents will drop of their students by 11:50 AM and pick them back up at 2:30 PM (unless otherwise explained in the sign up). If you are taking the bus it will leave the pick up location at 11:20 AM (Arrive around 11:10. If you miss the bus you are responsible for driving your students to the location) and return to that bus site around 3:00 PM (it is extremely important that you are on time to pick up your student).  There will be a staff member at the site to check students in and out.

Bus Pick up and Drop off locations:

Please note that bus pick up/drop off sites are not always at the Epic day locations. The bus will leave from each pick up site at 11:20 AM and return around 3:00 PM unless otherwise stated in the sign up. If you miss the bus you are responsible for your students transportation. DO NOT stop the bus if it is pulling out and you are late. If the bus is moving you have missed it and need to transport your students to the location. If they miss the bus one direction they can still ride the bus back.

Goal of Discovery Day:

These experiences are designed to empower students to learn, practice, and develop skills that will support them throughout their life. Students will cultivate creativity, confidence, problem-solving skills, social skills, accountability, work ethic, and resiliency through a variety of guided exploration experiences.  Unlike our field trips Discovery Day is just for our students.

No Food:

Make sure your children eat BEFORE they come. There is NO lunch or snack time. There is NO eating allowed on the bus at any time. We don’t allow students to purchase food from vending machines or snack shops when we are out and about so please do not send money with them. Quick, no mess snacks from home are acceptable if absolutely necessary but it can NOT be consumed while on the bus or in the classrooms.

Checking Students In/Out:

When arriving and leaving Discovery Days all students must be checked in and out by a Discovery staff member. If students will be riding home with someone other than their parent or on the bus please notify Jana in writing (text or email) before the session begins so we can make sure student go home with the correct person. If your students come running up to you at the end of Discovery they most likely didn’t check out with our staff member. Do not take children until they have been checked out with our staff member.

Discovery Day Rules:

  • Our Discovery sessions are a 3-4 week commitment. If you know you are unable to attend each week of the Discovery session, please do not sign up for the session.
  • We will not accept any late registrations. Any changes to schedule or cancellations need to happen BEFORE the registration deadline.
  • If something comes up and you are unable to come to one of the days that you have signed up for, please contact:
    • Jana Stout: 801-810-9141,
  • Dress Code: We have Discovery Day T-shirts that must be worn on Discovery Days. The cost for the T-shirt is be $5.25. These shirts are available for purchase only in front office at the Pleasant Grove location. It would be wise to call ahead (801-785-9300) to make sure they have your size.
  • Discovery Days are for all our enrolled students only.
  • Volunteers will be involved on an as needed basis. Unenrolled students are not permitted to attend with a volunteer ie. babies, toddlers, and other children that are not enrolled.
  • Positive attitude and behaviors are expected. We reserve the right to require a student to take a break from Discovery Days until a behavior contract is established. We expect participants to follow directions and be respectful of people and property. We do NOT ALLOW name calling, swearing, physical aggression, or bullying. If any of these things happen during Discovery Days parents will be contacted and we will document the incident. We maintain and enforce a three strike policy with inappropriate behavior. Students who receive three strikes will be asked to not participate in Discovery until we are able to establish a behavior contract and it is followed.
  • Riding the bus is a privilege and we required appropriate behavior from the students while on the bus. Safe and appropriate behavior includes: No food or eating, sitting down correctly (on their pockets facing forward) the whole way, no physical aggression, swearing, name calling, bullying, and following bus driver and adult leaders instructions. We have a three strike policy. If your student receives a strike we will contact parents so you can support your child in maintaining appropriate behavior. This strike will also be documented for our records. A student receiving three strikes will no longer be able to ride the bus to and from Discovery Days.
  • We expect you to pick up your students from Discovery Days on time. Here is the late student pick up protocol.
    • Bus: If students ride a bus (ie. Springville, Draper, Lehi) and parents are late for pick up here is the protocol. Pick up time is usually 3:00 pm. Staff will be calling parents of students who have not been picked up as soon as the rush of checking out students if over. (If you have provided incorrect or unused contact information in the sign up then we will not be able to get a hold of you because we use that information provided.) 15 minutes after the bus arrives any students who are not picked up will ride the bus back to the school and wait in the front office to be picked up there. Please note that the school and front office close at 4:00pm.
    • Canyon Grove Academy: Pick up is at 2:30 pm. At around 2:45 pm our staff will be contacting parents of remaining students to see where you are at for picking up your students. If we cannot reach you, students will be taken to the front office to wait for you to come and pick them up. Please note that the regular school lets out and will be in the middle of their carpool pick up during that time and that the school and front office close at 4:00 pm.

Behavior Expectations:

Discovery Day is a privilege and not a right. We have large groups of students to ensure the safety for as well as maintain a positive learning environment. We expect that participants will be respectful to their teachers, volunteers, and fellow students. We expect students to follow directions and participate appropriately. Anyone not following these expectations will follow this protocol. 1) be given a verbal warning with the behavior expected clearly stated and allowed to stay with the group.  2) be asked to sit out (for about 10 minutes) before rejoining the group the student will need to commit to being responsible for their appropriate behavior and then rejoin the group. 3) they will be asked to sit out and a parent will be called to come and pick them up. When behavior gets to a level 3, parent, student, and Jana Stout will need to work together to come up with a behavior plan for the student before they are allowed to attend Discovery again.

Please ensure that you contact information is current in the case of an emergency.  There will be no unsupervised interaction with students unless it is with a staff member who has received a background check.

Parent Volunteers:

We need parent volunteers for each session. Volunteers are vital and ensure the success of the program. We need you and are so appreciative of your help. Volunteers will help with managing the safety of the students and monitoring for appropriate behavior. Parent volunteers will need to purchase and wear a Discovery Day T-shirt at each session. This helps ensure the safety of our students as they know who they can go with questions and easily identify adults that are with the group. Unfortunately, as a full day parent volunteer, you may NOT bring younger children with you as you volunteer. We need your full focus. You may have younger children with you if you are only volunteering to assist with the bus pickup and drop off. We hope you will join us on some or all of our adventures this year.
